from the club prez.... Rocky Mountain Weekend Parking Donation Why include the parking donation into the entry transaction? The Rocky is a three day event; Friday evening through Sunday. The ultimate administrative concern (you mean there are other concerns beside trail selection) for the landowner, organizers and AMA is having the “Liability Waiver” signed by all who enter the premises. The second, is being able to accept a parking donation, which NETRA and most participants agree is an acceptable means of recognizing landowners and their willingness to share use of their land. These two actions require volunteer labor. Considering money is received, the organizer (me) feels responsible adults are required to cover the task from Friday evening until Sunday at noon. Full time adult coverage diminishes available adult manpower better used for other event tasks; i.e. parking, sign-up, start, sweeping, etc. Youngsters, though capable of requesting waiver signature and making change should not be placed in jeopardy by being left alone with any amount of cash, particularly after the sun goes down. I addressed these concerns by initiating the “Entry + Donation” concept. Surveying earlier Rocky events, I noted the number of riders arriving alone; pooling with others; multipule bikes (two or more). I also recognized the junior entrants would be impacted twice if they in fact rode both days. (Unfortunately I was not pro-active in addressing this situation in the original solution...) The compromise for riders and the Club (landowner) was to reallocate the average parking donation per vehicle of $10, to a donation of $5 per rider per entry. For those sharing a ride (norm of two) it was a break even; riders coming alone, a gain; multiple riders (3+ not the norm) sharing a ride, a loss (by maybe $2.50 or so a piece). For 2008 we’ve relieved the junior’s impact by asking they donate simply for the first event of the weekend. The net “parking donation” is a loss, which the Club/Event will make up for. Most land owners/managers use past years experience as a precedence for trail usage, Club/NETRA/individual etiquette and fiancé. All said and done, the parking donation for any NETRA event is but a pitance in the cost of a weekend. What other event or activity do you camp or park for $5/$10 a day? For 2008, it is as posted, please understand the whys and why nots. How about a valid concern: Is it going to rain? What are the trails like, any hills, any rocks? What’s the address for us GPS users?
