                                                    ATTENTION ALL PSTR MEMBERS
Recently a PSTR club bylaw change was put forth for a vote to make the club a two tier member system.  This change could divide the club into members qualified to vote, propose changes, provide club direction and receive NETRA work credit and those who just sit on the sidelines.   The vote is scheduled for the next meeting on March 2, 2010 and will pass by a 2/3 majority in favor vote.
 If this bylaw passes,
·         only those members who have accumulated a minimum of 25 work credits from PSTR will be voting members and qualified to work their club’s NETRA event!  Do you want NETRA Championship work credit?
·          If this bylaw change happens, then at this time next year, the election and bylaw meeting  will only have this small group of “qualified voters “ to have a say in the club.  It won’t matter if you’re a 10 year member or a member since the club’s inception, without first acquiring 25 work credits you will no longer be a full fledge member.  Do you want to have a say in what your club does?

Show up early at the next meeting to learn the truth and cast your vote on this important issue.
The PSTR news letter should have this bylaw proposal in it. Read it carefully.  Make your own decision.  Show up, ask questions and most importantly vote.
Sincerely:
Matt Ostiguy

I don't think this is a Ride, Race, or Event.

Can a Mod move this to the PSTR club forum?

I wanted alot of people to see it and it involves getting work credit so I figured it could go under riding and racing.

As I understand the proposed change, based on the number of points earned throughout the previous calendar year, a club member with less than a certain number of points earned via work and participation will lose voting rights for the current year.

The side effect of the point system is voting rights versus non-voting rights and eligibility or non-eligibility for work credits for hare scrambles and enduros.

Perhaps this is not the right forum to discuss PSTR bylaw details, and if it isn't, maybe this thread should be locked or deleted by an admin.

Wouldn't my post at least qualify as an event. (Rides, racing and events)  I gave the date of the event (MARCH 2) and this "event" can clearly effect my racing.  No one would be trying to hide this post in a lesser viewed area of this web site would they?  Isn't this forum about letting people know what's going on?  What if this was your clubs bylaw change?

How big is your club that you can't argue the points for or against this at a regular meeting?

But I agree with you. Its your club's forum, you paid for it. Get it out in the open. You know how I feel about limiting someone's rights.....don't get me started......

I don't see many other clubs announcing regularly scheduled meetings in that forum.  Clubs stick to their own club forums, especially if it's something that only affects it's members.

This thread should be moved immediately to the PSTR forum, it is a club-specific matter. Moving it to Rides and Racing only serves to embarrass PSTR and give more voice and opportunity for 'input' from those who don't have the full picture nor a stake in the outcome.

What's the problem? Sounds like you don't want to fullfill the work requirements but you want the word credit?

While there are strong opinions on several sides of this issue that will probably disagree with my characterization of the issue(s), here is the situation summary IMHO:

PSTR has grown to over 300 members. A vast majority of those members (at least 260) join PSTR only to ride in our Short Course series. The rest of the membership consists of two groups, I will label them the EO Enduro-only riders (~10 members) and MHS the More Hare-Scrambles-oriented (~30 members who primarily ride HS, occasional enduros, or just work PSTR events). With PSTR putting on upwards of 20+ events a year including NETRA hare scrambles, kids events, a NETRA enduro, Poker Runs, our Short Course series, etc.; there is a lot of work to do. There is little debate that the MHS group does at least 98% of the work behind the club.

The by-law change to require a member to reach a threshold of PSTR work points was driven from two concerns held by the MHS group:
1) The Short Course riders currently have full voting rights, and with their vast numbers could show up en masse to any meeting and take over the club.
2) Most of the EO group only appear at a PSTR gathering (including our twice-monthly meetings) once a year for a few hours on Enduro Day to work a check and get their required NETRA Enduro Series work credit.

Issue #2 above came to a head at a recent club meeting when a member of the MHS group submitted a motion to not have a PSTR enduro this year due to the hassle and low rider turnout. The EO group (which does have some very long term PSTR members in it who in the past contributed a lot) objected and a passionate debate erupted over whether someone who (for whatever reason) currently contributes very little if anything to the club should have the same rights as someone who - at minimum - shows up to work a few events and attends a few meetings a year.

Should be an interesting meeting...

Sounds like PSTR as the same problem NETRA had last year- too many events!!
Just because a few people in the club want something to do every weekend ie- put pn events, not ride them, they shouln't burden the rest of the club with unreasonable work requirments.
Anybody want to chime in and shine some light on theese work requirments. How many events do you have to work, meeting to attend, forest clean ups etc to be a full fledged member?

20 events a year is way too much for 40 guys to have on the plate IMHO,sounds like an easy way to burn out alot of guys who do the brunt of the work. hope everything works out for you guys.

Geoff, i'll chime in with what i know for points

1 point per meeting attended.  there are 24 meetings a year
5 points for a workday (earthday cleanup, short courses, most any other event where we are clearing trails / setting up for an event)
I believe 10 points for trailbossing an event.

It was mentioned that we had over 100 members that attained the 25 point threshold last year.
also, the point scale will be posted along with the exact bylaw change in the next newsletter.

It sounds like a lot, but it's way more fun then work.  I look forward to spending time on my bike with a great bunch of people setting up race courses, dual sport rides, scouting new trails, etc.  Honestly can say I have some of the nicest people over the last 5 years, who go out of their way to thank PSTR for putting on all the events we do, which really makes the work part worth it.  One people give-up doing stuff for the sport, dirt riding will be over faster then Martha Coakleys election.

Actually putting on a GOOD event is a lot of work and responsability and really not that much fun in essence . Its a burden you place on your self and your help. The reward comes after when it is done and you can scratch it of the calander knowing it was done wright and the participants will be back next year.

I totally understand the reason behind the point thing and really appreciate what the PSTR members do for me and my son. I race as many events that I can and make sure my son Matt races them also. My problem is my son runs me ramped with all his sports and if not him it my step daughter and her events. It takes an act of congress to find the time and money to get a race in on Sunday or Saturday for my son. I usually rush after the race to some other event my family has. If I race Sunday I am doing something for the family the other day. I am not typing this to show ever one that my life is busy but only to show my point. I would love to have my son be part of the club, pay to race all the events and when he needs a work credit for his mini hare scramble events be able to work that day helping. I love my busy life and doing everything for my family so I am not bitching about that. I am just trying to point out that I am one of those 260 members that appreciate what the club does for me and would be disappointed if I could not find a way to get my son to earn his NETRA points without having to earn points through the club. I will understand if it goes this way and I will try like hell to help the club and earn those points so my son can work an event and if not I guess I will just have to find another club that needs a worker for the day. Please please do not make this into a bitch session, I am just showing another point of view. Also I would be cool if my voting right got taking away but allowed to work the day of an event to earn NETRA credits. That I understand because I am not that active and I should not have a voting right.

Thanks
Sean Kelly

I feel PSTR has existed for 35 years without this bylaw it can live with out it. I have heard a lot of negative things in the past few months. There really is no need for the negativity. I feel that this bylaw is going in place to divide and conquer instead of unify our club. We should be focusing on quality events, finding new riding areas and enjoying ourselves without this nonsense.

I have been a member of PSTR since it was first organized and I am opposed to this by law change. For the last few years I have paid my dues and worked on many of the clubs events. I am getting OLD now and have some major medical issues now. My riding is limited but I try to help the club at events as much as I can. Now to think that I might not even be a voting member of the club does not sit well with me. In my case for the last few years I have paid my dues and just worked events for the club. If I can’t vote why should be a member? I know people will say you only need twenty five points but when you’re old and sick it’s not that easy. This bylaw change is creating two classes of membership, voting and nonvoting. If I can’t vote after paying my dues for over thirty five years then I won’t be a member of PSTR in the future.
