so whats the first thing to know when buying a trials bike? i know the whole mechanical aspect of motorcycles and motors, but i know nothing of trials bikes and i have always wanted one. i can only imagine how much better my riding would be on my mx bike if i got even moderately good at trials riding. i dont think ill be getting one soon because of my money situation, but ive started doing research so i know when the time comes.
so what do i look for? used bike price, a prefered brand, or years to stay away from, or what motor size for a beginer? im an A class hare scrambler, so im only new to the bike and the riding style, not a total beginer. thanks

All you need to know is by a Beta Rev 3 270. Just about any year is good, buy the newest you can afford.

If your not in a hurry, it would be best to try and ride as many different bikes as you can and make a 1st hand decision on what you prefer. Trials is not a one size fits all sport. All of the bikes made in the last 5 years are really excellent and it really comes down to personal preference and value. If you goto an event, there are usually several bikes for sale that you can try out. You could also check with local dealers and clubs (not sure where you live). Trials riders are a friendly bunch and getting a ride is easy. You can find event scheduals and contact info for clubs and dealers near you here:

Your selection of used bikes will go up dramatically near the end of the season, so alittle time spent doing your research will pay off.

Good advice...

If you go to the last NETA event at Meriden theres usually a good amount of bikes for sale.

Another thng to add is trials bikes dont get the abuse conventional bikes get. The spend there life at low rpm. The get scratches and dings but thats about it.

While your researching and shoping for a bike, I would pick up a trials tire for your 125 and try it out. You will be surprised at the amount of traction and ncie ride that it gives. I got one in May from Jack's Cycle in Fremont,NH and although I havent used it much I did do an enduro with it. It made me realize how much of a throttle junkie I am, and you really dont have to be. Throttle control goes along way over the course of a 3 hr race. It's sad that it has taken me 15 years to realize it.

are the two strokes becoming cheaper than 4strokes? id rather have a 2stroke anyways. i would love to run a trials tire on my bike but i dont have an 18" rim

I was in the same boat as you 6thwide last fall. I go my 2000 Beta rev 3 270 and love it. I spent $2300 but it looks like a new bike. It is zero maintenance and I just throw on a helmet and put around the back yard when I have 20 minutes to kill. I would say I have learned more on the trials bike than any other training tool I have used other than maybe a mountian bike. Plus is is super fun!

Hey 6th,
When you look at one keep this in the back of your mind.Bearings! ......Most people do not keep up with the bearing maintaince on these machines.Even when they come from the factory they have just enough grease on the bearing to keep them from rotting.

Just make sure the squeaks you hear are coming from the brakes(if any)not the head tube or linkages or axles. Especailly if some one is pressure washing them or mud/water riding.Its not out of line to make someone open an axle to prove it 5 min or less great for your piece of mind.....just bring it up when you go see it not before.

Of course the crank case too. Ask them what their using as to keep the same lubes going in the machine.You can always throughly clean out the old in put in your prefered. Keep in mind you must let these things warm up or the clucthes will launch you.....Wait for the fan on the Radiator good rule of thumb.
Plenty of maintaince things on line for most or ask in trials forums you just have to weed out the %rap from some.

Good Hunting & Wear your equip 15 mins in the backyard is were most of us eat it.
