I am planning on heading down to W virginia in June to do some riding at Hatfield McCoy. Anyone who has been there have recommendations on which riding areas are the best, and any good places to stay? Thanks

I've been going there with a group for about five years and don't really care for "Little Coal River" or "Pinnacle Creek", they're a little too tame. We haven't ridden "Indian Ridge" so I can't comment on that one, but "Dingess Rum", "Browning Fork" and "Buffalo Mtn." have been alot of fun. Last year we stayed at Twin Hollow Campground and Cabins in one of the cabins. They were nice, but the road up to the site was pretty rough.

Been down there twice over the past two years.  My best advice would be to try and hit as many of the areas as you can while your there.  Each area has a unique 'thing' about it that is different from the next.  Whether it's the sights such as old coal mine entrances or scenic overlooks or the soil type....each system has something different to offer.  First year we went down we did nothing but ride Browning Fork.  The second year we hit all but one of the areas.  Last day there we hit one of the trail systems that had just opened.  Pretty sure it was named Indian Ridge or something like that...whatever the deal...the trails were pretty nice.  If you stay in Gilbert (Browning Fork System) you'll be within an hour or so from all the other areas.  Also...if you stay in Gilbert, plan a ride through the Browning Fork trail system from Gilbert to Mann.  You can plan a route as long or short as you want to get there (I think the short route was 30 - 40 miles).  When you get to Mann you can ride into town and refuel and hit a fast food joint then ride back.  Makes for a fantastic day of riding.

As far as lodging goes....definitely stay at a place someone recommends to you.  Our first year we stayed in the rental called 'Promise Rock'  http://www.promiserock.com/indexmain.html.  Awesome location if you're with a large crew.  There's even an old school Asteroids arcade game in the place.  The only complaint any of us had with the place was the smell of the tap water which had a rather strong sulfer smell to it. 

The second time down we stayed at the Gilbert house  http://www.livingoodlodging.com/house.html.  Fantastic location close to the center of town and right across the street from a car wash.  The home owners were incredibly nice (even did our laundry).  No water smell at this house as it's on town water.

It's funny that a few guys have mentioned the smell and slimy feel of the water down there...I've got the same thing out of my well here in NH. I have a water treatment system but it still doesn't come out right...I'm just used to it.

A few of us went down in march 07. We didn't get much riding in because of weather ( a major rain storm ) but we stayed at browning fork trail house. Marty and Lisa were awsome and so were all the towns people in the area. Everybody makes you feel welcome.

We stayed in Logan.. The travel time to the areas was a bit much but there was more activities than campsites.. We go every year... Love it.

Just got back on Monday. I went down with my 2 boys and had a blast. It was a great place for them to get seat time and log alot of miles. I will definately go again next spring.
We went to the Little Coal River and enjoyed the easy trails. We worked up to the harder trails. If I went down with the guys I would recommend the more difficult spots. It was fun to ride out past third gear as these trailos are so much faster than NE trails.
I stayed in a rented RV at The little Coal River Campgrounds. They just and I mean next week will open thier 1st cabin. Really considerate and nioce folks. I would recommend this spot as it is right at the trail head. It was 70-80 degrees every day we were there. nice.

Sounds like a great trip.  I'm seriously jonesing about not going down there again this year.  Such a great place to just go and get away from it all and enjoy nothing but riding.
