It seems whoever was responsible for getting the sanction application to the AMA either got it in too late to get it back in time for the event today, or forgot completely...  MAJOR brain fart, guys.  The end result was the event being cancelled due to no liability insurance... Bummer. I rode the loop twice, and the Sections looked awesome, and probably would've held up if the rains had returned. Some folks never even got the chance to put their gear on or fire up their rides. Now I'm home. I used up my one of my "Kitchen Passes" for nothing, not to mention a tank of fuel. And now my wife has stuff for me to do. Lesson learned, I hope.

No matter how bummed out anyone is about the event being cancelled I guarantee no on feels worse than the SMC guys. I agree a lesson learned here by a club that is just returning to trials. They have a great venue there and a super group of guys. Thanks SMC for the attempt and I look forward to, and I hope you guys reschedule.

I think before people put the BAD BREATH on SMC, they should put on an event to see what it takes. It is always easy to say you should do this ect. It was an oversight, it happens.

I though the sections were great, can't wait to ride them. GOOD JOD SMC.

I rode last years Trials at Brimfield, so I know the SMC is capable of putting on a first class event. I also know what it takes to put on a Trials. When the Minutemen Trail Riders were active in the 80's and 90's, we put on several Trials events in Ossipee, as well as Hare Scrambles and mountain bike enduros in Searsport, Maine, with over 400 entries. I truly understand and appreciate the time and effort all the volunteers put into planning and executing these events. It doesn't mean I am any less bummed when an event fails to take place at the last moment due to a clerical error. I am sure the SMC have learned a hard lesson nobody ever wants to repeat. Bob

Thanks Guys for being good sports about what happened yesterday. No one feels worse than Steve and the SMC club for the disappointment everyone felt when they learned that the event was being cancelled.  I know how tough it is to get away from family/home obligations and Steve/SMC deeply regets the time and money lost yesterday by all the ridership.  SMC will do their best to make your return trip to the SMC event a very special trials experience.  Were not sure yet what can be done to help offset the costs incurred but we are looking at it.

Last year we had the insurance but not the weather, this year we had the weather but not the insurance.  Lets hope from now on we get both.....

With all the types of racing I've competed in and the organizations I've dealt with, I can honestly say this has to be the only one where the promoter was not crusified for the event not taking place!! This reenforces the different mentality of the trials community and the closeness of the group. I'm sure there are plenty of people upset, but the fact that so far 5 have defended them is fantastic!!

I think Steve put it best when he said, "I thought people would be furious and yelling at me but they're just wandering around looking like they're at a funeral." I think that made him feel worse.

As they say, the jobs not done until the paperwork is in. This is a classic example of how sometimes we can get so caught up in the mechanics of a project that we tend to forget the basics. Im sure it would have been a great trial. We from NY look forward to the new date. Just to add a little humor, we still went riding, its just the first time I ever drove to CATRA via brimfield.

Same here. Went out my back door when I got home and rode a new section that I was working on. I admit I was disapointed that we could not just ride or join the club for the day. Then I remembered when I screwed up the milage and time sheet for the first junior enduro I trail bossed and how I felt. Look forward to coming back down on a nice sunny warm day. Thanks for putting on the event.

Trials has always been about pushing yourself to ride the best you can. There are exceptions but most riders that I know put more value on riding well than beating someone else. I think this attracts poeple who are more likely to empathize with others. Hell, we all could have made the same mistake...

NETRA clubs submit the AMA paperwork at the NETRA sanctioning meeting. It helps eliminate this type of problem. Perhaps NETA should consider a similar polcy

Bob, about 10 years ago NETA submitted all the AMA paperwork for upcoming club events.  Somewhere along the way, the practice changed.

Steve, It was nice meeting you anyway! I hope that we can see this event happen. It looked to be a superb effort on the part of the club, despite the cancellation. I was excited to see all of the trials bikes there and I am looking forward to getting to another event.

Bob: SO does this mean YOU are STEPPING UP to be the SANCTIONING guy??????  GOT MY VOTE
From what I understand, it is a problem IF it happens a lot. This was a MISTAKE!!! and it is the first of it's kind that I have seen in 33 years I have been around Trials.

Tim years ago NETA did the Sanctioning, but it was a lot of work for the Secretary, it was voted on that every Club do there own.
This year we have 16 events.

I believe Leo was told by the AMA that NETA can't do the sanctions. Seems a bit silly to me since AMA gets the same money anyway but there it is.

I agree, lets not go overboard because of one slip and by a new event host. Also keep in mind that the NETA annual meeting is no longer in Nov - Dec time frame but in Jan. This would not give a NETA Secretary a whole lot of time to get everything organized if he/she were to do the sanctioning. Additionally, many clubs (for whatever reason) still have not set a date or even know if they are going to host an event until later in Feb or March. I think the task is best left at the club level.

It was unfortunate that this happened but a good reminder to those who enjoy all the riding, yet do none of the organizing, that it takes a lot of work and coordination to pull off an event.

You misunderstood my post. I'll clarify: At the NETRA sanctioning meeting, clubs submit the COMPLETED paperwork. Then NETRA simply COLLECTS IT. O.K.?

Bob:
There is no reason to adopt anyones rules, ours work just fine. It was a mistake and I am sure it won't happen to them again.
My ? still stands, are you stepping up?

Bill,
I'm confused. Your statement "There is no reason to adopt anyones rules, ours work just fine." is clearly telling me to "butt out", and that my ideas are not needed or welcome. Then you're telling me to "step up". Make up your mind, please. You can't have it both ways. I hesitate to "step up", because based on your aggressive statements, I don't think I want to subject myself to your attitude. My life is stressful enough, thanks. Now go find somebody else to poke at. Bob B
