loserbaby -> McCain or Obama...which means more riding? (9/8/2008 1:53:44 PM)

All other things being equal, it would be entertaining to see what NEDB thinks about the future of our sport as it relates to the candidates. Anybody remember the roadless act Bill imposed on the White Mountain National Forest? Who wants to save what for who?

So far I only have heard that Sarah Palin's husband is an active Snomobile rider, and has a pilot's license (like many of the poeple who live in AK). Semi-useless info.

I did just send an email to both canidates (including VPs request for comment) through their website to see where they stand. Obama's took two attempts to send the message.

We'll see what happens...

It's programmed that way no doubt.[8|]

Just follow where the greenies campaign contributions will be going (Obama). I'm sure the anti access crowd will be trying to start up a new roadless initiative if he get's in.

That's my take on it anyway......

Post the results if you hear anything. At the Colorado 500 this year we learned there is a huge effort to close the stuff between Crested Butte and Ouray...in Gunnison National Forest. We need more Wilderness out there. Both times through, didn't see another trail user in that Forest. These are primarily high elevation deserts...I'm willing to share...its just crazy because as you expand the square miles of uninterrupted wilderness, it becomes more inaccessible to hikers. As far as I could see there was one two track going through the whole forest. It will be sad to have more trails go the way of "Fossil Ridge".....all you can do is look from afar. I always wondered why alot of National Forest is open to riding out west and not New England...

I hope that that is a sarcastic statement...

"From quick google search

wilderness - land remaining in basically wild (i.e., undisturbed) condition, with few if any traces of human activities.

wilderness area - a wild area that Congress has preserved by including it in the National Wilderness Preservation System.

Wilderness Act (http://www.fws.gov/laws/lawsdigest/wildrns.html)
Wilderness Act of 1964 (16 U.S.C. 1131-1136, 78 Stat. 890) -- Public Law 88-577, approved September 3, 1964, directed the Secretary of the Interior, within 10 years, to review every roadless area of 5,000 or more acres and every roadless island (regardless of size) within National Wildlife Refuge and National Park Systems and to recommend to the President the suitability of each such area or island for inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System, with final decisions made by Congress. The Secretary of Agriculture was directed to study and recommend suitable areas in the National Forest System.

The Act provides criteria for determining suitability and establishes restrictions on activities that can be undertaken on a designated area. It authorizes the acceptance of gifts, bequests and contributions in furtherance of the purposes of the Act and requires an annual report at the opening of each session of Congress on the status of the wilderness system.

Under authority of this Act over 25 million acres of land and water in the National Wildlife Refuge System were reviewed. Some 7 million acres in 92 units were found suitable for designation. From these recommendations, as of December 1998, over 6,832,800 acres in 65 units have been established as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System by special Acts of Congress.

In addition, the Alaska Lands Act (P.L. 96-487) established 7 wilderness areas in Alaska, comprising 18,560,000 acres. This Act also provided for use of motorized vehicles and construction of cabins, fisheries and aquaculture facilities, and other structures in these wilderness areas, in recognition of the unique conditions in Alaska.

Specific wilderness areas, acreages, and establishing legislation are listed in the "Annual Report of Lands under Control of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service" available from the Division of Realty, United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
"
This law is probably why we do not have many if any wilderness areas in New England. 5000 acres is a starter farm out west... Imagine what that would cost anywhere in New England...

loserbaby -> RE: McCain or Obama...which means more riding? (9/8/2008 3:50:22 PM)

Those wilderness areas are referred to when you ride out west as "out of bounds". There no one can run any motorized device, including chain saws. Outfitters must hand saw fire wood for hunters. Federal Marshalls were hanging out by Crystal mountain on KDX 200s at 14,000 feet looking to bust people. So I was surprised to see they let there be motorized use, even in Alaska. Thanks for the info...and ya, I'm full of sarcasm about more stuff we need from Uncle Sam....funny thing is the folks out west say once they close it all, then its all open! YaHoo! Ride with side arms baby.

Speak softly and carry a BIG gun... The warning shot is usally the best shot...[;)]

Image trying to fight a forest fire with a pail vs. using a helicopter or firebomber...or trying to rescue someone in there by foot... Wicked smart (a little sarcasm does go a long way)

Vote for McCain, all the tree huggers are voting for Obama.

baron -> RE: McCain or Obama...which means more riding? (9/9/2008 8:44:54 PM)

No response from either canidate as of yet... Go figure. I'm sending the same question to both of my local reps also... maybe one of them could shed a little light on the topic and where they stand...

Maybe if they understood how many people actually ride responsibly and dare I say "actually vote" they'd be a little more interested. How many members of NEDB are there anyways?

I remember a walk-out that the majority of my high school (over 85%) and I participated in response to a rapid dismissal of a well liked and respected teacher. It was quickly organized and even made the news in a positive light... Has this been done around here before to supporting our cause?

the jeff -> RE: McCain or Obama...which means more riding? (9/9/2008 9:29:16 PM)

My vote will go to McCain, not because of riding. Neither Obama or McCain will attack your right to ride. But Obama will attack your paycheck and your constitutional rights. He will attack the second amendment, And I believe the 2A is most important. So I will vote for McCain.

Problem with all this is the Rich run the country...thats the way it is. You can take risks in this country and succeed financially. When the rich get richer, I hate to say it, they create more jobs for the working class. Dissuade their investments through greater taxes and they invest in Mexico.

gixxerw -> RE: McCain or Obama...which means more riding? (9/10/2008 1:49:42 PM)

Don't have to be rich to get screwed by the Nobama plan. If you and your spouse work to get what you want and make over a certain amount you will get screwed. Now say your parents die and leave you a ton of property you will get screwed because Nobama wants to reinstitute the inheritance tax!!!!! He wants to tax your 401Ks higher to pay for SS.

skid Jackson -> RE: McCain or Obama...which means more riding? (9/10/2008 8:36:50 PM)

Fastest way to creat real wealth in america....

A congressman's pay should be related to how much income his constituents get to keep!! The more the gov takes from the people the less the congressman gets paid!! bingo instant tax cut!!

gixxerw -> RE: McCain or Obama...which means more riding? (9/10/2008 8:53:12 PM)

Term limits would help also. Put their raises to a public vote!!!!!!

nrvs-nelly -> RE: McCain or Obama...which means more riding? (9/10/2008 9:15:53 PM)

My problem with the entire government system is that they ALL lie through their teeth just to get elected.  I promise you that any changes Obama says he will make will not happen and then he and the Moonbats will blame the current administration and the Republican party for the complete disaster by saying that the changes they wanted to make can't happen because he(obama) inherited an office that he didn't realize was so bad off.  Same as our current Gov.  I actually heard a Liberal democrat on the radio say that he is voting for McCain because of Obama being disingenuous(sp?).  McCain/Palin all the way!
