Here's the chance to be heard. Don't buy into the BS about how you'll just hurt yourselves if you make a stink. that's the only reason any forests are still open.

Forums on state forest stewardship start in Westborough

The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is sponsoring five public forums in February, beginning with one in Westborough, to discuss draft recommendations on the future stewardship and management of forest lands within the Massachusetts state parks system.
DCR began the Forest Futures Visioning Process last spring to determine how best to manage the myriad public benefits and values of forest land within the agency’s parks system,
including recreation, tourism, aesthetics, renewable forest products, habitat diversity, and
landscape ecology, and how to strike the appropriate balance among them.
According to a DCR press release today, the process has several components, including formation of an advisory group of stakeholders and the Technical Steering Committee. The Steering Committee, which includes academics, practitioners, and scientists, is developing the draft recommendations with input from the public and the stakeholders.
"We are committed to having an open, wide-ranging, public conversation about forests in
Massachusetts," said DCR Commissioner Richard K. Sullivan Jr. in the press release. "We had three public forums and forest tours over the summer, and we look forward to the Technical Steering Committee’s recommendations and hearing public comment."
DCR contracted with the Massachusetts Office of Dispute Resolution & Public Collaboration at UMass- Boston to develop a design for the public process, act as facilitators throughout its implementation, and ensure that the discussion and processes are unbiased.
Forums are scheduled at the following:
  • Thursday, Feb. 4, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
    Westborough Public Library
    55 West Main St., Westborough
    (Snow date: Tuesday, Feb. 16)
  • Saturday, Feb. 6, 10 a.m.– Noon
    North Adams Public Library
    74 Church St., North Adams
    (Snow date: Saturday, Feb, 13)
  • Saturday, Feb. 6, 2 – 4 p.m.
Berkshire Community College – Melville Hall Room 201
    1350 West St., Pittsfield
    (Snow date: Saturday, Feb. 13)
  • Tuesday, Feb. 9, 5  – 7 p.m.
    Jones Library
    43 Amity St., Amherst
  • Thursday, Feb. 11, 5  – 7 p.m.
    Taunton Public Library
    12 Pleasant St., Taunton
    (Snow date: Thursday, Feb. 18)

The Technical Steering Committee is composed of 20 individuals who have a high level of
expertise in the issues, trends, and best practices of forest conservation and ecology, invasive
species, landscape ecology, natural resource economics and law, recreation, silviculture, social policy, aesthetics, watersheds, and wildlife habitat. They are advocates for good science, forest management, and process, and are respected by a broad cross-section of stakeholders.
The draft recommendations will be posted soon on the DCR website, www.mass.gov/dcr. The
public is encouraged to review the recommendations and comment on them by e-mail to
MODRDCRFFVP@umb.edu. The Technical Steering Committee is expected to make its final recommendations to DCR in late winter 2010.

Steering right off a cliff???

I don't see any outdoor enthusiasts in the "Steering Committee"... You know the people who actually go outside, enjoy the outdoors, and the sports that take place in them.

Isn't Frank Frey on the committee?

The Technical Steering Committee Members (PDF) are all conservation focused folks: http://www.mass.gov/dcr/news/publicmeetings/tscbios.pdf

If you want to see what they are up to there is a Group Page on Google:  http://groups.google.com/group/forest-futures-technical-steering-committee

baron -> RE: Forums on state forest stewardship (Before this disappears from the web) (12/24/2009 12:08:24 PM)

I sent a link and copy of the original post to Netra's President and hopefully he has some insight whether or not NETRA is aware of these upcoming meetings.

Manray -> RE: Forums on state forest stewardship (Before this disappears from the web) (12/24/2009 5:43:53 PM)

It would be prudent if a number of us showed up too. I intend to go to the ones east of the Ct river.

blackduc98 -> RE: Forums on state forest stewardship (Before this disappears from the web) (12/25/2009 9:31:49 AM)

You can't leave this to chance, just hoping that netra is somehow on top of this.  Every one of us needs to show up.  This is a political game, and like it or not, we have to play.

Paul, PM me when the time gets close.  I'll go with you.

danwilms -> RE: Forums on state forest stewardship (Before this disappears from the web) (12/26/2009 3:26:39 PM)

Those who do evil fear the light. If we are not represented with considered argument we allow them a photo op. If we go and bring up tender points and make them uncomfortable not only do we make it obvious they are there not for the forests but only self interest but take some of the rosy glow off of them being there to represent all the users of the forests. By all means bring the kids and the wife. Wear a suit. Show we are not the Neanderthals they offer us up as.

Remember the press that these people will invite are only the ones that will support their cause. If you have people in the press who are less biased please invite them to go. Nothing ferments "yellow journalism" like having only a few reporters who are in agreement with one side. I’ve been through a hatchet job from the local pro-horse press. It wasn't pleasant.

Believe me we have to play their game.

I am thinking of making a few of these (at least for curiosities sake). Is this something that should be broadcast to the riding community a little louder?

edktm -> RE: Forums on state forest stewardship (Before this disappears from the web) (12/26/2009 10:01:31 PM)

I think Jerry's on vacation...

dseften -> RE: Forums on state forest stewardship (Before this disappears from the web) (12/28/2009 9:56:16 AM)

I'll go to the Berkshire one at Pittsfield. remember, we are acting as stewards of the land currently, promoting general public use of the forest, maintenance, and conservation. and we have documented hours of our involvement over a period of years.

baron -> RE: Forums on state forest stewardship (Before this disappears from the web) (12/28/2009 8:19:53 PM)

Pres. J. Sherman got back to me on 12/27.
In short he said that NETRA is Aware of these Meetings and is part of the task force in analyzing these issues.
