Here is an email I received from the BoT:

We just received notice that the Stark Brook Bridge will be barricaded tomorrow (Thursday) and thus closed to all vehicular traffic. The bridge has structural deficiencies and will be closed indefinitely. All traffic to the Stark Pond Trailhead will now have to go in via Route 77 to Ray Road. We’ll be working with DOT and the town to have the signage moved and also to look at what additional signage will be necessary for those who approach the now “old” access route via Winslow Road. This effectively closes off Mansion Road as well. It’s unclear at this time weather the gate at Winslow Road/Stark Lane will be kept closed or open. We’ll likely put out a press release tomorrow with this notice. Please pass the word on.

----------------------------------------------------

If you currently enter from Rt 13 just head up Rt 77 past the convenience store on the right and watch for Ray Rd on the left across from the Transfer Station.
Follow Ray Rd to the end where it will become a dirt road into the parking lot.

Jim; is there any word on fixing the deficiencies ? I assume  it being a town road, Dunbarton would have some say in it ,yes ??

This bridge is a galvanized 1/2 culvert (a very big one) with fill and stone/mortar abutments. It looks like the culvert has rusted out in places down at the water line and some of the stone/mortar work is falling apart. Would not surprise me to find out the town doesn't plan to do anything with ..... hope not but .... tough times + little used bridge by the locals .....

Bill at the Bureau of Trails said that as far as he knew the bridge would be closed for quite a while for the Town to make repairs.
They must have determined that it needed to be closed before a failure.

What we all do need to do is watch our speed down Ray road.
I always drive into the parking lot via Ray road but if there is a large amount of additional traffic come riding season the residents along the road may become wary of vehicles speeding along into the park.

If we are lucky the people on ray rd will not be happy with the traffic and get on the towns case to repair the bridge so ray rd goes back to being a relatively little traveled rd.

If the army core does not leave the old road gated than most people will just travel down to the bridge and park on the road. If the core does leave the road gated to get people to go around, then that stretch of dirt road is going to turn into a drag strip. My prediction is this bridge thing is going to be a big pain in the arse. the jersey barriers in place will also screw up the sled trail system in the area. Not to mention the little gas store that reopened .... that place is cursed!! it won't have any car and truck traffic going by it like it used to!!

Geez...I didn't think of that.
The guy will reopen the store after all that work and there'll be hardly any park traffic going by.

still must have cost some money to get the other store going!!

Yeah great point Skid. that bridge needs to be fixed. I was told the store and property was bought for it's back taxes  24 grandish . Also will the old trail to the store be reopened? A lot of out of states won't even know about the bridge closer never mind about taking Ray rd.

I dont believe that that was ever a legal trail since it left the park.

It was a marked and legal trail.  The water right behind the store, is part of Hop-Ev.  If it's open, the trail should also be. If there is no Deli though.... screw em'.

There is an unsettled dispute about who actually owns the bridge. The Town of Dunbarton thinks the Army Corps owns it. The Army Corps thinks the Town owns it. Then on top of that it's being called a historical bridge. So once ownership is resolved, repairs would have to abide by historical bridge preservation standards. = it will never get fixed.

historical my ass .. the location maybe ... not the structure ....
It is a huge galvanized culvert. the stone abutments are just ornaments put on it to make it look nice. The reason it is closed is the culvert has rotted out at the waterline. I agree .. it will never get fixed especially if it gets tagged with the historical label. I was thinking pressure from the locals and maybe the local snowmobile club, the guy with the gas station and dirt riders might get something done in a few years ... but if you look at how much the acoe blew out the last part of ray road .... Nobody modifies a road like that for short term use. That bridge closure will really screw up the sled club trails ....

I've been told that the work on the bridge will be wrapped up soon...or at least quickly.

...and...we will have a trail to ride to the store.
I'm not sure if it will be open May 23rd, but the plan is to have access to the store this season.

gas pumps are open, maybe 24/7 not sure. no one at the store ... I'm guessing they will have a "light duty seasonal set up" when the trails are up and running. If nothing else you will be able to get gas ... if you have a credit card

Jim,
so who owns the bridge, the ACOE? I get all my local news at the Dunbarton transfer station and it's usually, I say usually reliable. I hope they fix it fast. It takes me twice as long to haul my trash and recycling to the transfer station with that bridge out.

I just met with Pete and Shaun from the State and it turns out that the work on the stone bridge going into the parking lot might take 2 years.

The trail to the store will br open this season though...but remember...10 mph going through there along the road!

I'll give an update at tonights meeting.

Any Bridge over 50 years old is considered historical by the State. That bridge was built in the late 1930's.
